A life, in fragments

A hundred-odd photographs from twenty years — fjord edges, reefs, long tables, small aeroplanes, and a great many fires beside Swedish lakes. Not a highlight reel so much as the places I would happily go back to. Click any of them to see it properly.

Why these things, in words

The version that turns up to interviews
Somewhere in the middle of a very long wedding
Explaining something at length, as usual
Conference badge, somewhere loud
A glass of something pink, and no further plans
The whole cast, before I had any say in it
Being led somewhere, under protest
Mid-negotiation
Photographed against my will, as usual
Gothenburg, on a wall that says UNTIL WE MEET
A roadside stop on the west coast
Harbour, evening, good company
Old friends, sunglasses, no agenda
Three in a hammock, badly
New Year at a very long table
Late, and nobody wanting to leave
Lunch that ran long
A brewery tour, ostensibly educational
The end of a long, good day
Aurlandsfjord from Stegastein. The photograph does not convey how much of me wanted to step back.
Lying down seemed the sensible way to look over an edge
A village that exists because the mountain allowed it
Northern Norway, from the deck of a ferry
Ålesund at the hour when the whole town turns pink
The Oslo Opera House, which you are allowed to walk on
The same roof, on a day when everyone had the same idea
Lofoten. The village down there is Å, which is the whole name.
On a reef, a long way from a spreadsheet
A cuttlefish deciding what colour to be. I could watch this for hours.
On the bow, pretending to be useful
Sailing into the sun, which is harder to steer by than it sounds
Reporting for duty
Crew, loosely defined
A good day's work
On the water
Five in the morning in the archipelago. Worth the alarm.
The west coast from above, which is the only way to understand it
Red boathouses, a jetty, and nowhere else to be
Someone's boathouse, doing exactly what a boathouse should
Sea and sky doing very little, beautifully
Masts at dusk, Adriatic
Rigging, from the wrong end of it
The Red Sea, from the end of a very long pier
Limestone cliffs, and a boat with an enormous engine
Long-tail, Thailand
An empty beach, briefly
A fire, a lake, and the last light of a Swedish June
The correct configuration of a summer morning
Later that summer, same idea
Beach fire, west coast
Cooking over a fire, which improves everything
A deck, a grill, and a view
The grill, at capacity
Autumn doing its whole routine at once
Sunset through the reeds
Deer that had entirely lost their fear of people
A driftwood shelter built by strangers and improved by us
The bridge, the cabin, and the flat water in between
Autumn on the water
Wheat, close up, for no particular reason
Colour, in the middle of a grey month
Cherry blossom, for the fortnight it lasts
A garden path in late May
A Japanese garden, in Gothenburg of all places
A bicycle nobody intends to ride
One tree, holding its ground
The East Side Gallery. Still the most efficient piece of political art I know.
Treptower Park, Berlin
Rovinj at dusk
A cove that looked retouched in person
A hill fort, and a great many steps
The coast road in January, which is the point of January
A manor house doing a convincing impression of a castle
Neuschwanstein, the original theme park
Predjama Castle, built into the cliff itself
Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim
Gothenburg's old brickwork, lit
Modern Gothenburg, in red
A light installation that made no sense and was excellent
Something enormous, green and mechanical
A waterfront that knows what it is for
Under the fortress
The quay, in the last of the light
Everyone out at once
Dancing on the quay, which happens more often than you would think
Morning on the river
A sauna that announces itself
A terrace with the right view
Giza. Colder than anyone warns you about.
New Delhi at seventeen, entirely out of my depth
The auto-rickshaw, India's finest invention
Traffic that runs on consensus rather than rules
A monkey with somebody's crisps
Scooters, night, questionable judgement
Above the weather
Four headsets and a very small aeroplane
Indoor skydiving. Considerably harder than it looks and vastly less elegant.
Ten minutes of stillness above a city that would not stop
Four attempts at the beginners' course before any of this looked like dancing
Confetti, and a very loud evening
Festival, front third
A band in a small room, which is the best way to hear one
Outdoor stage, long summer evening
Somewhere in the middle of a crowd
My colleague, asleep on the keyboard again
A film crew, in snow, at work
A brief encounter with the Empire
Wedged, on purpose
A monkey who had clearly done this before

Enough of that
